Can you distill yourself down to a few keywords?

by Andrew Warren-Payne on January 14, 2010

A good friend of mine thought it would be hilarious to send me the following video. If you can’t see it below, you can see it at YouTube.

Although I think I know what I do a bit more than the man above, it got me thinking about how many of the “gurus” out there talk about personal branding online.

The main aim appears to be: distill yourself to a few keywords, push keyword related content out, network with other keyword optimised people, and sit and be happy in the fact that your life on Google can be defined in that way.

I’d like to put a few pointers out as to why I think that doesn’t work, particularly (for want of a better term) with Generation Y.

For most professionals, they are regularly called upon to perform tasks outside of their job description

Say if you work in sales, but you also have to work on the code for the company website, do the accounts on pay day when Bridget isn’t in, fix the photocopier because no one else knows how, and go to dinner with the boss to impress a potential investor? Do you really just work in sales? Can you really distill what you’re good at down to a few keywords?

People change focus – often suddenly and in a big new direction
What if suddenly you change everything you do, and go for a career move? Or move city, and get really into experimental dance, when before you worked as a chartered surveyor with a great blog all about it?

Will a closing post suddenly send traffic in the right direction?

People have lots of varying interests
So, what if you’re a risk analyst with a personal interest in Moroccan cuisine? Add to that the fact you’re devoted to your pet Shih-Tzu, do a little bit of photography, and all your holidays seem to involve taking up a new sport? Can you distill that down to a few keywords and conquer them online? Is there a LinkedIn or Facebook group that you can create that will instantly link the risk calculating gastronomes with Shih-Tzu pedigrees out there, all over the world? Can you magically work the URLs of blog posts, categories, and backlinks to tie this all up and funnel the traffic towards your site?

Tell me if you can. Bob’s Shih-Tzu wants to schmooze a little.

So to close…
My personal idea is this – your name is your keyword. You shouldn’t worry too much about branding yourself with another term just because it has a low amount of competition and high number of searches.

Be yourself. Why not?

November 25, 2009

Gerry is the founder and CEO of Customer Carewords, and specialises in helping companies produce effective web content. I found out about him after reading his book Killer Web Content (affiliate link), which I thought was pretty cool.
He publishes a weekly newsletter, New Thinking, and he allows republishing of his newsletter (thanks Gerry!). I’ve chosen [...]

Need to learn something? Where to turn for information

November 22, 2009

I’m an information addict. Like many people online. Virtually whatever anyone wants to know is out there online.
But how to get access to it all, and distil it into something useful which you can learn from? Something that can be processed and is easy to digest? Here are some of my thoughts on how I [...]

What’s an OPML File? Why should I use it?

November 14, 2009

So, you kinda read blogs. Sometimes. Especially when you need to “keep tabs” on something.

Image via Wikipedia

So, do you know what an OPML file is? Wikipedia can sort of tell you, but here’s a quick list of why you should look into using them:

You can download superlists of blogs and put them into your RSS [...]

Don’t change the product, change the perception of the product

October 27, 2009

Like many good podcasts, I subscribe to the TED talks. I take them on my Blackberry and they’re great to listen to during otherwise “dead time” (for example, when commuting).
One of the funniest and most interesting talks on TED I’ve found this year is this one by Rory Sutherland. With a few hilarious examples, he [...]

September 17, 2009

This is one of my favourite recipes, which is quick, easy and cheap. When I don’t have inspiration for much else, I usually do this with a lovely side salad.

300ml Vegetable stock
1 red onion
2 garlic cloves
1 tin of chopped tomatoes
A handful of pitted olives
Fresh basil
125g halloumi

My Expedition Kit List

September 8, 2009

This list is what I carry when I go travelling. I’ve used pretty much the same stuff, with a few improvements here and there, since 2002. This stuff has solved many of the problems I’ve encountered, not only of myself but also of others. I’ve tested this out in Namibia, Tanzania, the Picos de Europa [...]
